We are Patients Medical - Welcome to our Center...

Since the practice started in 1974, more than 10,000 patients have been treated at Patients Medical. Our unique approach, called Complementary, Integrative or Holistic Medicine, provides the most effective and safe treatments available in healing by synthesizing the best of two worlds: mainstream medicine and alternative medicine.

Housed on the ninth floor of an eighteen-story building in the heart of New York City, the Patients Medical 9,000 sft. Center for Complementary Medicine is one of the largest facilities of its kind in the world. Established by Dr. Warren Levin in 1974, it is dedicated to treating patients who are seeking alternatives to the methods and results of conventional medicine.

The Center uses the most innovative therapies and treatments currently available to safely and effectively treat illnesses. Patients have available the latest in I.V. vitamin/mineral therapy, as well as herbs, nutrients, dietary modification, stress management and other lifestyle changes depending on their needs. We have successfully treated many medical conditions with limited reliance on pharmaceutical drugs. These conditions include:

Heart Disorders, Blood Pressure and Circulatory Problems

Diabetes, Hypoglycemia, and Hyperinsulinism

Fatigue

Arthritis

Headache

Cancer

Allergies

Lyme Disease

Gynecological Disorders

Immune Disorders

Crohn's, colitis and GI problems

Prostate disease

Skin ailments

Multiple Sclerosis

Weight Loss

Thyroid

The Center's highly trained professional staff reflects the diversity of Complementary Medicine. The team of experts at the Center includes Internists, Cardiologists, Dermatologists and Gynecologists in addition to RNs, nutritionists and medical assistants. Alleviating symptoms is only one part of the healing process, and so our ultimate goal is to make the body strong by naturally boosting the immune system and restoring its biochemical balance.

There are several ways to become a patient at the Center. Below is a brief overview of the alternatives available to you.

Standard Comprehensive Program

The first visit is usually about one hour long and includes a complete history and physical examination by one of our practitioners. The goal of the first visit is to get an understanding of all of your health issues so we can get to the underlying root cause of your medical problems.

This is very different from the typical 15 minute visit you may have encountered in many physician appointments.  Short visits may not give physicians enough time to address the cause of your issues.  For example, if you are feeling fatigued, a tonic may be the quick patch to your problem; but the underlying root cause which could be hypothyroid, adrenal fatigue or heavy metal toxicity also needs to be addressed to give you a long term solution.  This is what we do.

The specific blood tests you will need are determined by information obtained from a comprehensive medical questionnaire, as well as on the findings of your physical. You will also be given a Psychosocial Evaluation if needed, to determine to what degree stress factors are contributing to your symptoms or medical condition. This first visit may also include a 5-hour glucose tolerance test and/or a food allergy panel. In most cases, the need for these tests can be determined when you arrive so that you may plan your schedule accordingly.

The second visit will include a consultation with your physician to discuss the findings of your blood, stool urine and other tests that may have been performed. Through both sessions, we will design and implement an individualized treatment plan, which will most likely include dietary modification, an oral vitamin regimen, herbal/homeopathic remedies and other appropriate treatments, based on your health needs.

Subsequent visits, tests and treatments will be determined on an as-needed basis. Bear in mind, however, that we find the best results are usually achieved through frequent monitoring and fine-tuning your initial treatment plan as progress is achieved.

Fees: Since each treatment plan is individually tailored to your needs, the fees vary to some degree. Insurance reimbursement for these services varies greatly as well. However, we will do everything possible to assist you in filing your claims and receiving appropriate reimbursement. In any case, many medical treatments not covered by insurance are tax deductible.

Consultation for a Specific Health Condition

Although it may add time and some cost to the process of becoming a patient, some people prefer to start with an extensive consultation with either a staff physician for a specific medical problem you may be having. If you choose this option, for your first visit, we will require all test results or reports (excluding films) that you have accumulated over the last 6 months, as well as a written list of any medications and their exact dosages presently being taken as well as those taken within the last three months.

Telephone Nutritional Counseling (TNC) With a Physician

At the request of many out-of-state callers and others who cannot come to the Center, we have designed this program to offer assistance to those who are on a Weight Loss Diet. It is an inexpensive way to receive personalized attention from a distance. In order to participate, you will be asked to submit a questionnaire for our review prior to the phone session. To arrange for TNC, PLEASE NOTE THAT TELEPHONE NUTRITIONAL COUNSELING (TNC) IS FOR THOSE WHO NEED HELP FOLLOWING THE ATKINS OR ANOTHER DIET OR WITH OTHER NUTRITION-RELATED MATTERS, NOT FOR THOSE WITH MEDICAL PROBLEMS. Please call our New Patient Department, at 1-212-661-7673 to schedule.  The cost for a one hour consultation is $400.  If you have a medical problem, please make an appointment to see one of our physicians at the Center by calling any of these numbers

 How to Live Longer...

This one's a no brainer: seeing a

general physician on an annual basis

can significantly lengthen your life by

catching ailments before they start or

treating emerging ones.

  • sugar level screening,
  • bone density test
  • Echocardiogram if you are over 45    Examination of the ears, nose, etc.
  • hormone and allergy testing
  • pap smear and gyn exam (for women)

OUR INNOVATIVE CARDIAC PREVENTION PROGRAM

The Center offers a complete cardiac health care program that combines the best of conventional medical and complementary medicine for prevention and treatment of cardiovascular problems. Heart disease is the #1 health problem for both women and men in the United States.

Almost 700,000 people die of heart disease in the U.S. each year. That is about 29% of all U.S. deaths.  The risk of coronary heart disease can be reduced by taking steps to prevent and control those adverse factors that put people at greater risk for heart disease and heart attack.  Risk factors that need more attention include diet, nutrition and elimination of toxic metals from the body.

Our Cardiac Prevention Program protocol includes:

  • A diet and nutritional program.
Our staff and practitioners will work with you to create a diet and nutritional program that may include vitamins and supplements like fish oil and CQ10, that is specifically tailored to your personal health needs.

  • An exercise program.
We will help create an exercise program appropriate for your current fitness level and abilities that is designed to help you achieve improved heart and overall fitness.

  • Chelation therapy.
Chelation therapy is a safe and often effective intravenous procedure utilizing EDTA (etylene diamine tetra-acetic acid). Although best known for its use in dealing with heavy metal toxicity in the body, chelation therapy may also aid in the treatment of atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease and arthritis. EDTA helps prevent arterial spasms, reduces intravascular plaque formation and improves blood flow, even in diseased arteries. It has also been proven to increase calcium metabolism, thereby reducing the risk of osteoporosis.

Our Cardiac Prevention Program includes the following forms of diagnostic testing:

  • Echocardiography: Non-invasive ultrasound of the heart to view the heart valves.

  • Stress echocardiography: Ultrasound of the heart before and after treadmill exercise to evaluate coronary artery disease.

  • Carotid duplex scans: Non-invasive ultrasound of the arteries that supply blood to the brain, neck, face and head.

  • Arrhythmia Services: Includes 24-hour ECG recordings and event monitors to evaluate heart palpitations and irregular heartbeats.

  • Tilt table testing: A non-invasive diagnostic tool for the evaluation of fainting (syncope).

  • Cardiac risk factor blood panel profile: In addition to lipid profiles and metabolic chemistries, we also include tests for C-reactive protein, lipoprotein a, homocysteine, serum amyloid A and interleukin 6.
